Memorial digs early hole against Norman

Edmond Memorial’s softball team made a late-run at the visiting Norman Lady Tigers last Friday, but were unable to overcome poor play in the early innings as they fell 9-6 in 7 innings. “It was our first game and we did not do well in the first two innings,” Head Coach Janet Chartney said. “We just got in too much of a hole.” The first two frames were indeed rough for the Lady Bulldogs, as they gave up 8 of Norman’s 9 runs. 6 of those 8 came in the top of the 2nd inning. Memorial would make a run in the 6th and 7th innings when they scored 2 and 3 runs respectively. The Lady Bulldogs recorded 5 hits in those innings, they only had 9 throughout the whole contest. “I was very pleased with our hitting,” Chartney said after the game. “Kendall Murphy and Crimson Davis looked great at the plate.” Murphy went 2-4 from the box and recorded a run and 2 RBIs, while Davis scored twice while batting an identical 2-4. Seven Lady Bulldogs recorded hits in the loss, 8 of which were singles. Mary McKey recorded the only extra-base hit for Memorial, when she recorded a triple during one of her at-bats. Despite the poor showing early, Memorial’s defensive nine dug in during the final five innings, only allowing one run and giving their bats a chance to claw themselves back into it. “Defensively, Kendall (Murphy) ran down several balls in the outfield, and Emerson Heron was very solid behind the plate,” Chartney said. Memorial had hoped to enjoy a home-stand early this week, but week-long rain storms played spoiler to that, forcing cancellations and reschedules on both of the Lady Bulldog’s home contests. Now, Memorial is forced into a stretch where four of their next five competitions will be played on the road, starting with this weekend’s Perry Tournament. Play for the Perry Tournament begins on Thursday, and is scheduled to conclude Saturday.
