Edmond Santa Fe, Memorial, North and Deer Creek all hosted regionals on Tuesday when the Class 6A Volleyball Playoffs began, and all of Edmond’s teams took regional victories without dropping a set. First, Santa Fe opened up their regional against Midwest City. The Lady Bombers were the lowest seed in any regional matchup, and the differential in athleticism was evident. The discrepancy of skill allowed head coach Will Ethridge to play his role players extended minutes during the win. Those role players didn’t disappoint, either, when they dispatched the 16-seeded Lady Bombers in consecutive sets by a combined, three-set score of 75-29. Simultaneously, across Edmond in Cimarron Middle School’s gymnasium, the defending champion Edmond Memorial team was handling their first round opponent. The Lady Bulldog’s win came hand-in-hand with Santa Fe’s victory, as the two schools began their regional tournaments early with each respective bracket’s first match beginning at 3:30 p.m. North and Deer Creek waited a bit later to blow the starting whistle, but the results were almost-identical to that of their sister teams. North handled the Moore Lady Lions in straight-sets in Tuesday’s first round, with Kamryn Bacus leading the way when she killed the ball off two different Lady Lion’s faces in the three-set rout. North claimed the match by scores of 25-12, 25-12 and 25-20. With Bacus dominating at North, one of her summer teammates was doing the same west of town. Teagan Polcovich, who plays with Bacus on Oklahoma Peak Performance’s summer team, was leading her Antler squad against Putnam City West. The sophomore, flanked by senior hitters Grayson Schimmels and Lauren Anthony, assisted in the vast majority of the team’s points when the Antlers defeated the Lady Patriots in straight sets. That dominance feigned when the Antlers faced off against Shawnee a few hours later in their regional championship, at least in the early sets. The Antlers struggled to find separation against the Shawnee Lady Wolves, with the first sets being identical 25-23 wins. Deer Creek made sure the third set was not close, however, after a Grayson Schimmel’s kill sealed the third set, and regional championship 25-17. Just before Deer Creek’s regional title, Edlam rival Santa Fe clinched their regional in straight sets, too. Santa Fe’s win against Westmoore meant the Lady Wolves clinched their regional bracket, just as they have every year since Will Ethridge took over coaching duties back in 1993. Over at Cimarron, Memorial maintained the storyline with a 3-set victory over Norman to give the Lady Bulldogs a shot at defending their 2016 title. Keeping up with Edmond’s straight-set sweeps was North, too, when they clinched their regional title against Yukon in Tuesday’s championship match. The 3-0 win sends the Lady Huskies, along with their three other sister teams, to Sapulpa on Monday for the 6A State Playoffs. Those playoffs have been claimed by an Edmond team in 3 of the last 4 years. With Edmond sending 4 of the 8 teams competing for the title, it makes the likelihood of the state title staying in an Edmond school even higher. Times for the State Tournament have yet to be determined.
