Memorial Bulldogs 43, Deer Creek 31

Meeting in a boys tournament bracket for the second time this month, Memorial up-ended Deer Creek again by 8 points behind a standout performance from Daniel Kvicala. After their earlier meeting went to double-overtime, Kvicala was certain on ending Thursday’s contest in regulatory time. Kvicala recorded a game-high 16 points. Kvicala was also Memorial’s leading rebounder (5) when he led the ‘Dogs to a 22-14 rebounding advantage. The rebounds paid off. Memorial’s efforts of limiting a struggling Antler offense to a single shot on most possessions meant that the Antlers were unable to put up enough points to compete on their 10-38 (26 percent) shooting. Taking out Hopgood’s 45 percent effort, the other Antlers only made 5 of their 27 attempts in the loss. It was evident, too, after a four-point lead ballooned to 12 during the Antler’s five-point fourth quarter struggles. Despite the poor shooting, the Creek defense impacted the game in other ways. Closing down the passing lanes, Creek forced Memorial to enough turnovers to keep the competition close until their cold streak late on Thursday. Memorial’s second win in as many meetings means the Bulldogs will meet Class 6A No. (WHAT RANK), and tourney top-seed Putnam City North tomorrow at 7 p.m. Creek will meet Ponca City almost an entire work-shift earlier at 1 p.m.
