Rolle moves on

Memorial’s Peter Rolle was the only Edmond wrestler to advance past Friday night’s 6A State Championship semi-final wrestling matches at the State Fairgrounds in Oklahoma City. Rolle, who entered the tourney as the top-seeded 138-pound wrestler dispatched Scott Patton 7-2 before edging out Ponca City’s Spencer Schickram, 5-4. Rolle will now face Choctaw’s Connor Holman Saturday night for the state title. Rolle’s success was solo, though, as Edmond’s wrestlers lost eight of their nine semifinal matches in Friday’s late section, dashing the dreams of a state champion list clouded with local names. Top-seeded Jackson Oplotnik fell 7-3 at the 113-pound semis to Mustang’s Tucker Owen, and fellow Bulldog Garrett Johnson lost in his final-four match after being paired with Bartlesville’s Laif Jones. Deer Creek’s Cade Manion and North’s Trent Higginbotham both dropped their semi-matches at 126- and 132, and Micah Lugafet fell at 145 after a close 5-2 decision win against Sapulpa’s Hunter Skaggs. Finally, North’s 1-2-3 hitters in Noah Hooks, Jake McCoy and Blake Minnick all dropped their championship play-in matches when the three combined to score two points during their three losses. All hope is not lost, though: All the aforementioned wrestlers, with the exception of Rolle, will get a chance to keep wrestling. They’ll begin their chase for a third place finish Saturday morning in the same building, hoping for a chance at redemption during the consolation semis and championships. The consolation tournament begins at 10:30 a.m., with Rolle’s championship match coming in the day’s second session. That second split’s matches will begin at 5:45 p.m., with opening ceremonies starting at 5 p.m.
