Edmond Swim sinks All State Records

Six Edmond swimmers ended their high school careers this week with a big showing at the Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State Swim Meet. Three athletes earned first places finishes and two of them set meet records. Edmond Memorial’s Katie Callahan garnered two wins for the West girls and toppled two meet records. Memorial’s Kellie Fischer also netted gold and cracked a long-standing meet record. Edmond North’s Matt Hutson notched a first place finish for the West boys. In all, 10 meet and two pool records fell during the All-State Meet at the P66 Aquatic Center in Bartlesville. The meet featured the state’s top high school seniors in a competition between the East and the West. The boys West team won nine of 11 events to defeat the East, 86-75. The girls East team beat the West, 96-60. Callahan, who will swim for the University of Kansas this fall, took gold in the girls 200 freestyle (1:52.57) and 500 freestyle (4:59.50) and broke meet records in both events. “All-State was such a special experience. I love how the meet forms dream teams of senior swimmers from across the state who get to be teammates for a day,” Callahan said. “It was incredible to watch and be a part of the Class of 2018 girls who broke so many records. I cannot imagine a better way to end my high school swimming career.” Fischer, who will swim at Florida Gulf Coast University, won the girls 100 freestyle with a time of 53.37. Her swim broke the 2008 record previously held by Memorial standout, Stanford swimmer and Olympic Trials Qualifier Samantha Woodward. Fischer also earned silver in the 100 backstroke. “I enjoyed the atmosphere of the East versus the West rather than school verses school. It was fun to have people on my team that have never been on it before,” Fischer said. “It’s always fun when a meet record is set, so I was excited to be part of that.” Memorial’s Sydney Parker, who will swim for Ouachita Baptist University, achieved a fourth place finish in the girls 100 butterfly, and North’s Brynnan Duncan took fifth in the 50 freestyle. Hutson, who will swim for William Jewel College in the fall, won the boys 500 freestyle with a time of 4:54.79. He also earned bronze in the 100 backstroke. Santa Fe’s Jacob Muller swam for silver in the boys 500 freestyle and placed fifth in the 50 freestyle. “I enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere as well as competing with friends. The combination made for a fun and fast meet,” Hutson said. “It felt great to win the 500 free, especially since I swam a personal best and was able to score points for the team.”
