Santa Fe handles Memorial in No. 1 versus No. 2 pairing

Edmond Santa Fe and Memorial met once again on Monday for the second time in as many weeks. The first meeting, the semifinals of the Heather Harkness Tournament on Sept. 8, went to extra-points in a fifth and final set, but Monday’s matchup saw the same result on a shortened set-count — a Santa Fe win. “I was very proud of my girls,” head coach Will Ethridge said after the win. “Getting a great win on the road against an extremely talented team in the Bulldogs.” Santa Fe won all three sets with scores of 25-21, 26-24 and 25-23 respectively. The pairing was between what the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activity Association’s (OSSAA) ranking system ranks as the two best volleyball teams in the state. Edmond Santa Fe, who’s 19-2 on the season, has been ranked No. 1 overall all season long. Memorial, not far behind at 18-3 overall, has consistently earned the state’s No. 2 ranking, and the Lady Bulldogs even earned a first-place vote during this week’s measures released on Monday. Santa Fe’s Lauren McCarty led offensive efficiency in Monday’s win, scoring with a hitter’s percentage of .444. Anastassiya Barakhoyeva had 19 assists, Rori Chartier had 16 match-wide digs and Lainie Britton earned two serving aces. Ryli Mills-Thomas also had two blocks in the win. The match was Edmond Memorial’s second top-5 home pairing in as many matches after the Lady Bulldogs hosted No. 3 Deer Creek-Edmond last Thursday. The Bulldogs won that meeting 3-2 after falling in the first two sets before sweeping the final three set points. Though Monday’s contest didn’t have the same run time as Thursday’s Antler-Bulldog clash, or even the Harkness semi-finals, Ethridge was adamant that the level of play was just as high. “It was a very spirited and competitive match,” the head coach said. Next for Santa Fe was a home pairing with Moore on Tuesday, before the Wolves take on the Jenks Varsity Tournament beginning Friday. Memorial will instead opt for the Owasso tournament this weekend, but not before they played host to Westmoore Tuesday evening
