Memorial Sweeps

Memorial journeyed to Duncan Saturday and both boys and girls easily claimed championships, while North won the girls and Santa Fe the boys at Edmond North in a busy week of OSSAA Class 6A qualifying meets. The 2019 State Track and Field Championships will be hosted by Moore Stadium Friday and Saturday. The top 3 performers in each of the 17 events at the four regional sites automatically qualify along with the next 4 best performances including ties. A new scoring system will also be in effect at the state meet for the first time. Two points will be given for 7th place and one for 8th, but medals will still go to only the top 6 in each event. Both Memorial boys and girls had an easy time of it at Duncan with the Bulldogs racking up 200 points while winning two relays. Runner-up Yukon had 113.5 points. Meanwhile, the Lady Bulldogs had a staggering 248 points for the championship with Moore a distant second with 125. The Bulldogs won the 800-meter relay in 1:29.72 and the 1600 in 3:24.96, and sprinter deluxe Dakari Charlton dominated both sprints, winning the 100 in 10.72 and the 200 in 21.82. Will Vickers in the 300 hurdles, Noah Plum in the 3200 and Jamison Evers in the pole vault were the other gold medalists for EMHS. Addie O’Connor kept the family legacy intact at Memorial with a double gold performance, winning the 400 in 58.63 and taking home the 800 crown in 2:23.72. Alysheeia Joseph finished the day with four golds as she won the 100 and 200 and also anchored the two sprint relays. Both girls headed a sweep in their events as Veagen Jones and Malia Hixson followed O’Connor to the medal stand in the 400 and Joseph was joined by Caylor Cole and Shekinah Oloyede on the 100 meter awards stand. Maddie Medina won her specialties, the 1600 and 3200, on her home course at North but added a new wrinkle to help her team. She qualified third in the 800 run in a time of 2:20.90. Kelsie Begansky and Blake Tarzia joined Medina for a 1-2-3 sweep of the 800. North girls also won the 1600- and 3200-meter relays for 40 of their 181 points. Deer Creek was runner-up with 64.5. The Santa Fe boys piled up 134 points for the championship trophy, scoring in 15 of the 17 events. The Wolves won the 3200-meter relay in 8:10.97. Nieko Nieves won the 200 and Connor Mayfield picked up gold in the 400 for the SF boys. Deer Creek’s Steven Clark came close to a double-double with a win in a tight race with North’s Parker Jackson in the 3200, then Clark came back to finish second in the 1600. Caden Peters of SF cleared 14-6 for the win in the pole vault. Third place: Shekinah Oloyede, 100; Caylor Cole, 200; Grayson McBee, shot put; Collin Morris, high jump; Boys 400 relay; Jay Kiefer, 800 and 1600; Joshua Strauss, 400; Ava Hoppe, long jump; Erin Talbott, discus; Katelyn Levings, high jump; Girls 3200 relay; Hattie Johnson, 100 hurdles; Malia Hixson, 800.
