Edmond Memorial rallies to top Edmond North in five sets

EDMOND — The sound of Annie Davis crushing the volleyball echoed throughout the gym.

Edmond Memorial's star sophomore jumped, drew her right arm back and hammered a spike straight into an Edmond North defender, who had no chance at returning it. The ball sailed into the Husky bench, and Davis turned toward her teammates and screamed.

Davis' kill was one of many for her in Class 6A No. 3-rannked Memorial's 3-2 victory against No. 2 North on Tuesday in Edmond Memorial High School's gymnasium. Her most powerful kill drew a huge reaction from the student section and the rest of the crowd, propelling the Bulldogs to their second victory against their crosstown foe.

"We appreciate our crowd so much," Memorial coach Natalie Murray said. "The girls definitely loved that, and it helped in a tight situation like this."

After capturing the first set, Memorial (20-5) dropped consecutive sets and fell in a 7-0 hole to begin the fourth. North star Kamryn Bacus was dominant. She tallied numerous kills and blocks throughout the middle sets and had six of the Huskies' seven points to start the set.

In the fourth set, the Bulldogs slowly decreased their deficit, winning two or three points at a time before tying it at 16. Eventually, Memorial was able to capture the set 26-24.
