Memorial Girls, North Boys win first home swim meet

The Edmond Memorial girls and North boys swim teams came up winners in the first home meet of the season last week at the Edmond Schools Aquatic Center. The competition included teams from all three Edmond schools, as well as Broken Arrow, Oklahoma Christian, Owasso and Verdigris. In a showdown until the end, North girls finished one point behind Memorial for the second-place finish. Santa Fe girls finished fifth. For the boys, Memorial took third with a one-point win over Santa Fe, who finished fourth. Leading the Memorial girls to victory were double-event winners Katie Callahan and Kellie Fischer. Callahan won the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly, while Fischer earned the top finishes in the 500-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual medley. Teammate Angelina Rossi added another win for Memorial in the 100-yard breaststroke. Lady Bulldogs Callahan and Fischer were also part of two winning relays as they teamed up with Sydney Parker and Riley Bushey to win both the 200- and 400-yard relay events. For North, Ryann James sprinted for two golds, taking the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events. The Lady Husky team of Ana Savva, Emma Reynolds, Hannah Brenning and Brynnan Duncan won the 200-yard medley relay. In boys’ action, North’s Chris Silva earned double victories, winning both the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke. Brendan Healy, Matt Hutson and Alex Reynolds added three more wins for North, with Healy winning the 100-yard backstroke, Hutson the 500-yard freestyle, and Reynolds the 50-yard freestyle. North’s quartet of Healy, Silva, Evan Drum and Reynolds earned the best time in the boys 200-yard medley relay. For Memorial boys, Luke Davis was the top finisher, winning gold in the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard individual medley. Davis also joined Bulldogs Max Myers, Teddy Shinn and Sam Hart for the first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay and teamed up with Myers, Hart and Lorenzo Pavia for gold in the 400-yard freestyle relay. “All the hard work that each swimmer has put in is showing in competition,” said Edmond Public Schools Head Swim Coach Heather Devoe. “The lineup for this meet was different than most, and again, each swimmer stepped up to meet the challenge. “The coaching staff is very proud of their swimmers’ efforts, gains and commitment to the team, and each swimmer should be proud, too.” Next, the Edmond swim teams will take on Jenks Tuesday, Nov. 14, at the Edmond Schools Aquatic Center at Mitch Park. The meet will begin at 5:30 p.m.
