Edmond swim hosts preseason scrimmage

Edmond’s high school swim teams hosted a preseason scrimmage with the Stillwater Pioneers recently in preparation for the 2017-18 season. No team scores were tallied, but the scrimmage at the Edmond Schools Aquatic Center was an opportunity for the teams to see where they are early in the season. The Memorial girls relay team of Sydney Parker, Angelina Rossi, Kellie Fischer and Katie Callahan kicked off the night with an easy win in the 200-yard medley relay, while North’s team of Ana Savva, Emma Reynolds, Ryann James and Lindsey Fuchs finished third. For the boys, North’s quartet of Brendan Healy, Chris Silva, Evan Drum and Alex Reynolds finished second, followed by Memorial’s team of Logan Stafford, Sam Hart, Luke Davis and Max Myers in third. In her first of two wins for the night, Memorial’s Callahan won the girls 200-yard freestyle. North’s Ivy Ott finished third. For the boys, Reynolds and Silva finished second and third for North. In the 200-yard individual medley, Healy easily won the boys event for North, while Santa Fe’s Chloe Case finished second in a close race for the girls. Memorial’s Davis then won his first individual event of the night, taking the top spot in the boys 50-yard freestyle, followed by second place finisher Braden Nicholson of Santa Fe. North’s Ryann James finished second for the girls. The Memorial girls dominated the 100-yard butterfly, with Fisher and Parker coming in first and second. Santa Fe’s Arrian Taton finished third. For the boys, Santa Fe’s Ryan Harris won, followed by Drum of North. In the 100-yard freestyle, North’s James took second for the girls, while North’s Joshua Lee and Hayden Burchfield finished second and third for the boys. In the girls 500-yard freestyle, Callahan sailed to her second victory, and Santa Fe’s Arrian Taton finished third. In the boys event, Memorial’s Davis finished victorious in his second event of the night, while North’s Reynolds got the third-place finish. North’s team of Trysta Duerson, Bailey Woolsey, Hannah Brenning and Amal Jamshed took the win in the girls 200-yard freestyle relay, while Memorial’s freshman quartet of Genna Callahan, Kristen Nieves, Alli Schein and Krista Parker finished third. For the boys, North’s Burchfield and Lee teamed up with Jack Tichenor and Noah Froese for the win. In the 100-yard backstroke, Memorial athletes Fischer and Parker finished second and third for the girls, while North’s Healy and Froese finished second and third for the boys. Memorial’s Rossi won the girls 100-yard breaststroke, while North’s Reynolds and Woolsey came in second and third in a close race for those spots. For the boys, North’s Silva took the top spot, and Santa Fe’s Ethan Reed finished second. The Memorial girls dominated in the 400-yard freestyle relay as K. Callahan, S. Parker and Fischer joined with Riley Bushey for the win. North’s team of Brenning, Reese Lugafet, Fuchs and Savva took third. The North tandem of Froese, Reynolds, Healy and Silva finished second in the boys 400-yard freestyle relay, while Memorial’s Hart, Myers and Davis joined Keegan Leibrock to take third. “Each school is in a fortunate situation because we've added more swimmers this year than we graduated last year,” said Edmond Public Schools Head Swim Coach Heather Devoe. “Our relays are strong, and we have many individual swimmers who will score points for our teams this season. “The girls’ teams at Memorial and North will try to chase down Bartlesville this season, while the boys’ teams at North and Santa Fe will go after Owasso, Bartlesville, Norman North, and Jenks,” Devoe said. “We’ll swim each of these teams in the pre-championship season — some of them twice — so we can focus on individual and team goals throughout the season.” In upcoming action, North boys and girls will duel Norman Thursday, Nov. 2, in Norman. Then North boys and girls will join Memorial girls and Santa Fe boys to compete at the All-State Preview on Saturday, Nov. 4. Held at the Jenks Trojan Aquatic Center, this meet showcases the state’s top eight Class 6A teams.
