Memorial Lady ’Dogs 57, Putnam City North 37

Memorial’s girls squad took care of business on Thursday, dropping the PC North Lady Panthers by 20 points in the first girls game of the tourney. The ‘Dogs got valuable burn from some of their reserves after they opened up a 16-point halftime lead. Eight minutes of game-time later, Memorial was doubling PC North’s score 48-24. The large lead, which happened largely in part of a massive Memorial rebound differential, enabled head coach Dandy Peeler to rely on some Bulldog names that are a little bit farther down the rotation. The move gave the reserves a large portion of in-game experience while simultaneously saving the legs of the top-seeded ‘Dog starters on the first day of a weekend-long tournament. Names like Cayren Davis, Jillian Ingram and Gracie Stell got the lion’s share of the second-half minutes, and they paid it forward. Working alongside a revolving door of starters, the three combined for 5 points and 6 rebounds. They were more impactful even later, when Karsyn Vanmeter and Lauren Ogburn got some time. The starters were pretty thankful for the rest, too. Calling for a late-3 late in the game, the bench exploded when Vanmeter sent a pump-fake from deep. Vanmeter didn’t shoot, but Stell did one trip later down the floor. Stell splashed the shot for Memorial’s third made 3 of the half, and the bench was up off their feet. All-in-all, the reserves were able to keep the majority of the Lady Bulldog and seal the contest 57-37. Memorial now moves to the Winner’s bracket where they’ll play at 2:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
