Memorial’s baseball team opened up their first game of the Edmond Spring Break Festival on Thursday afternoon when every single Bulldog batter recorded at least one walk against Bishop McGuinness. Eight of those nine walk-recorders scored. Those walks culminated in a huge, five-run fifth-inning. In that walk-a-thon, Daniel Adkins led off from the seven-slot with a four pitch walk. Eight at-bats later, Adkins drew another walk, this time after stretching Bishop McGuinness to a full count. Sandwiching Adkin’s freebies was four consecutive bases-by-balls issued to Zach Escovedo, Coit Morton, Trace Evans and Carson Siemens. The majority of those crossed home, too, when Corder Gutteridge sent a screamer through the legs of Bishop McGuinness’ Derek Abeln. Two ’Dogs crossed thanks to Abeln’s error on the hot corner. While it came in Memorial’s most prolific inning, Gutteridge’s slice wasn’t even the ’Dogs biggest bash — that one went to Coit Morton in the second inning. Morton took the honors on the heels of the in-the-park home run. On the swing, Morton sent a liner to shallow-centerfield. The hit escaped a diving Sam Schmidt and rolled almost to the 390 sign in dead-centerfield. Without backup, Schmidt’s misjudgment gave Morton, Dalton Riney, and Cole Emmons (who both reached on walks), enough time to all score on the hit. In total, the Bulldogs’ picky eating helped their batters reach 12 times on balls, and two other batters reached after being hit with errant pitches. Ten of Memorial’s total 14 runs came from a runner that received a base on balls. Pitching wise, Ryan Matlock was credited with the win after he tossed three and two-thirds, giving up 3 earned runs. Morton, who was middle-relief for Matlock starting late in the third inning, struck out four of his seven seen batters, and Major Kerr then shut the door after he retired six of his seven challengers in the final two innings. The win comes in Memorial’s first contest of the Edmond Spring Break Festival, as the maroons will host two more times over the weekend. Those matches, coming against Choctaw and Shawnee on Friday and Saturday, are each slated for 2:30 p.m.
