Edmond North comes alive in extra innings, beats Sandites, 10-5

SHAWNEE – Edmond North scored six runs in the ninth inning, coasting to a first-round win at the state tournament, ending Sand Springs’ season. The Edmond North Huskies beat Sand Springs, 10-5, in extra innings Thursday, Oct. 11 in the Class 6A state tournament at The Ballfields at Firelake in Shawnee. Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Sand Springs scored the tying run on an error from Edmond North. The Sandites’ Jacie Taber got to first on an overthrow and Sabrina Usher scored, forcing the extra innings, 4-4. After a scoreless eighth, Edmond North unloaded on Sand Springs with six runs on six hits, one walk and an error, pulling ahead, 10-4. In the bottom of the ninth, Sand Springs got another run from Taber with an RBI single to left that scored Usher, but the Sandites couldn’t add anymore. Sand Springs (23-9) took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning off of a two-RBI double from Cameron Clemons, but Edmond North freshman Emily Deramus hit a two-run home run in the top of the third inning, tying the game at two runs each. In the top of the fifth, the Huskies scored two more, taking a 4-2 lead, but in the bottom of the inning, with two on and two outs, Usher hit an RBI single to right field, scoring Drew Hawkins. The run pulled Sand Springs within one run, 4-3. Taber (6-1) pitched all nine innings for Sand Springs (23-9), and the Huskies used Jacee Minter and Evy Aud on the mound. Taber gave up 14 hits, 10 runs, eight earned runs, five strike outs, six walks and one home run. At the plate, Taber was 3-5 with one RBI. Madelyn Blair was also 3-5, and Clemons was 2-4 with two RBIs. Usher was 2-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Both teams committed two errors and they both left 11 runners on base. Since 2010, the Sandites have advanced to the state tournament six times, missing it only three. They made it to the state finals in 2015, falling to Choctaw.
