Deer Creek spoils Memorial wrestling's senior night

Edmond Memorial’s Senior night — and final duel of the season — was spoiled by the Deer Creek Antlers who defeated the Bulldogs 42-27 at Bulldog Gymnasium Thursday night. The Antlers won 8 out of the 14 duels, including falls recorded by Clayton Knapp, Cade Manion, Michael Lugafet, and Bobby Robinson. “The team’s performance tonight was what it needs to be this part of the year,” said Deer Creek head wrestling coach Kelly Henderson. “We’ve had some bumps and bruises throughout the year, but right now we’re doing what a good bonding team does, we fight for one another, we go out there, don’t give up anything and we stay fighting until the end.” Deer Creek stormed out to a 21-6 lead, winning four out of the first five matches. The run was capped off by Deer Creek’s Robinson in the 132 pound matchup. Robinson was down 8-4 in the third period, after being taken down twice. But with just 30 seconds left in the duel, Robinson was able to pin his opponent before time expired to make the late come-back for the Antlers. “I’m very proud [of Robinson’s performance],” said Henderson. “That just shows the work that we’re putting in, the belief system that we have in hard work and what pays off if you push through. Whether you get knocked down and you get back up multiple times, if it takes that, you end up breaking your opponents and that’s what we preach.” From there, the Bulldogs tried to take control by winning their own four out of five. It tied the overall score at 27. Kolby Simpson, 160, and Noah Kenny, 182, were both able to record falls late in the second period of their respective duels. The Bulldogs’ run was started off by their seniors, but Edmond Memorial would have to forfeit two matches forcing them into a hole and the Antlers would take advantage. The Bulldogs honored seniors Seth Osborne, Kyle Knowles and Peter Rolle. The Seniors who wrestled Thursday night defeated their opponents with a combined score of 15-6. “They’ve grown quite a bit,” said second-year Edmond Memorial head coach Albert White. “They’ve gotten better every year, I guess that’s what you ask for. They went out there today with the right intentions, [and] they wrestled with those intentions, so you can’t be too upset.” Deer Creek will be back in action at Dual State next Friday; Edmond Memorial now awaits the individual junior varsity and varsity state tournaments.
