Memorial golfs to COAC crown

Edmond Memorial’s boys golf team ran through a talented Central Oklahoma Athletic Conference field Monday afternoon after all five of their varsity roster finished inside the top-20. Austin Dolan finished fourth with a 72, and Cooper Wilguess matched another 72 into the sixth-placed spot Monday. Scott McPhail’s 74 and Zane Heusel’s 75 earned eighth and 13th, respectively. Finally, Asher Cuft rounded things off with a top-20 score of 78. All of Dolan, Wilguess, McPhail and Heusel’s final tallies earned them All-COAC bids. Memorial head coach Scott MacDonald said his team was able to win a conference title because they took an uncomplicated and simplistic approach. “I think we just kind of tried to hit fairways and greens, and then tried to make our putts,” MacDonald said, almost making the game of golf seem easier than it is. “We try not to make plays that make it harder on ourselves; We try to stay out of trouble.” That simplistic approach has benefitted the Bulldogs in second-rounds throughout the year. But, on Monday, they were able to come scorching out of the shotgun start to claim the COAC title in the process. “Most importantly for us it’s so good to play as well as we did in the opening round,” MacDonald said on the win. “It was just an 18-hole tournament, but we’ve been playing so much better in our second rounds this year that it felt really good when we went out and capitalized in the first round.” The win also upended a talented Edmond North roster in the same go. For MacDonald, that was a good measuring stick of ability for his roster. “Those guys have been so good for so long, you kind of always hope to make good moves against that program,” MacDonald said. “But, overall, we try to keep everything focused on us and focused on improving.” North finished runner-up in the tournament and two shots behind Memorial. The Huskies also had four All-COAC finishers with Walker Fuzzell and Jordan Wilson tying for third each with 72s. Shane Herlihy’s 75 and Carson Francis’s 76 each saw them wiggle into the top-15, too, ultimately earning All-COAC honors. North’s five-bag Matt Geurin shot a 79 on the day. Next up for Memorial is a two-round go at Enid’s Meadowlake Golf Course before a fateful, two-round pairing with North at Lincoln West Golf Club next Wednesday.
