Memorial wins 6A-1 Regional at Hefner

Edmond Memorial’s girls golf team continued their impressive season on Wednesday after the team won the 6A-I girls golf regional tournament behind a team-best score on the year. “The girls were all keyed up and hit the ball so well today,” Edmond Memorial head coach Janet Chartney said. Led by a top-2 finish from Lilly Whitley, the team won with a 306-overall. Whitley finished runner-up on Lake Hefner South once already this month, and her 73 was an eight-stroke improvement over the double-80s she shot in two rounds during the Hefner South Tournament earlier this month. “Lilly is now playing the way we always knew she could,” said Chartney of her 1-bag. “She is such a consistent hitter, but if she hits the ball astray she is able to recover with a nice shot to the green. I am very proud of how she is competing and leading our team.” Freshman Olivia Coit tied for third overall Wednesday before dropping to fourth on a scorecard playoff. According to Chartney, her emergence onto the scene has been a driving force in Memorial’s high finishes this season. “Olivia does not play like she is a freshman, and that’s great for us,” she said. “We’ve been looking for her to put up these solid scores all year long.” Rounding out the team was Memorial senior Loren Ogburn’s 77, Ashlee McDaniel’s 84, and sophomore Isabel Hoppe’s 81. According to Chartney, Hoppe’s score Wednesday was even more impressive given the recent adversity she’s faced. “Isabel started out last year progressing and then got sick and struggled with her stamina finishing last year,” Chartney said. “This year we have been looking for her to keep putting nice scores and she has not disappointed us.” Chartney said Hoppe is the team’s rock — acting as the most relaxed player on the team when they’re out on the greens. Chartney also said that each of Wednesday’s scores either tied or broke each individual girl’s personal record. Additionally, when reporting the scores Wednesday night, Chartney said she was proud of each individual team member. “We look forward to competing next week at the state tournament,” Chartney said. Memorial will tee off at next week’s state tournament starting at 9:24 a.m. on Wednesday, starting from Earlywine’s No. 10. Edmond North and Deer Creek will each start on No. 1 (at 10:04 a.m. and 10:20 a.m., respectively); and Edmond Santa Fe’s Ivy Harris will start her state tournament as an independent qualifier on hole No. 10 at 9:08 a.m.
